What is audio compression?

Audio compression reduces the dynamic range of audio by making loud sounds quieter. It helps even out volume levels and prevents clipping while maintaining clarity.

What do threshold and ratio mean?

Threshold is the volume level (in dB) where compression starts. Ratio determines how much compression is applied - 4:1 means for every 4dB above threshold, only 1dB comes through. Higher ratios mean more aggressive compression.

What are attack and release times?

Attack is how quickly compression kicks in after the signal exceeds threshold (in milliseconds). Release is how quickly it stops after the signal drops below threshold. Faster settings respond quickly but may sound unnatural.

When should I use makeup gain?

Makeup gain compensates for the volume reduction caused by compression. If your compressed audio sounds too quiet, add 2-6dB of makeup gain to bring it back to the original level.
