What is a noise gate?

A noise gate reduces or eliminates background noise by silencing audio below a set threshold. It's useful for removing hiss, hum, or ambient noise from recordings while keeping the main audio intact.

How do I choose the right threshold?

Set the threshold just above your background noise level. Listen to the quietest parts of your recording - if the noise is around -40dB, set threshold to -35dB. Too high and you'll cut desired audio; too low won't remove noise.

What do attack and release control?

Attack determines how quickly the gate opens when audio exceeds threshold. Release controls how quickly it closes after audio drops below threshold. Slower settings sound more natural but may let more noise through.

Can a noise gate remove all background noise?

Noise gates work best for consistent background noise during pauses. They won't remove noise that occurs simultaneously with your desired audio. For that, consider using a noise reduction tool or recording in a quieter environment.
